Robot Dreams (2023) is Pablo Berger’s wordless animated film adapted from Sara Varon’s graphic novel, following a lonely Dog living in 1980s New York City who mail-orders a Robot companion. Their fleeting summer together — roller-skating, sharing the beach at Coney Island, watching fireworks over the East River — ends when Robot rusts in place on the sand and the two are separated by circumstance and seasons. The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature, resonating worldwide through its tender, dialogue-free meditation on friendship, loss, and the connections that shape us even after they end.
