CHARACTER ORIGIN

Mei Kusakabe is the spirited four-year-old at the heart of Hayao Miyazaki’s 1988 animated film My Neighbor Totoro, produced by Studio Ghibli. Fearless and irrepressibly curious, she is the first of the two sisters to discover the great forest spirit Totoro — tumbling headfirst into his belly in the camphor tree hollow and greeting him with a delighted roar rather than fear. Wu Yu Studio and Huan Zhuang She’s original interpretation reframes that boundless wonder as a costume: Mei has dressed herself as Totoro, bag slung over her shoulder, ready to wander the woods as if she belongs to his world entirely.
