Character Origin
Indonesian pit viper (Trimeresurus insularis) slithers through the forests of eastern Java and the Lesser Sunda Islands—including Komodo, Flores, and Timor—where it perches on low branches to ambush rodents, lizards, and small birds. Its blue, green, or even yellow color morphs and red-tipped tail have made it a star of herpetological field guides and viral photographs alike. The species is easily recognized by 21 mid-body dorsal scale rows, up to 167 ventrals, and bright red eyes that warn would-be predators of its hemotoxic bite.
