CHARACTER ORIGIN
The Infected are the central horror of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us, human hosts overtaken by a mutated Cordyceps fungus that hijacks the nervous system and drives its victims into a feral, predatory state. The Clicker stage — depicted here — represents a host whose face has been entirely consumed and split open by fungal fruiting bodies, replacing sight with echolocation and leaving only the instinct to spread infection. That gaping, screaming maw frozen mid-shriek is one of the most iconic and viscerally unsettling images in modern survival horror.
