CHARACTER ORIGIN
Rei Ayanami is a central figure in Hideaki Anno's Neon Genesis Evangelion, a landmark mecha-psychological anime franchise spanning the original 1995–1996 television series and the subsequent Rebuild of Evangelion film tetralogy. Quiet, enigmatic, and carrying a truth about her own existence that she can barely comprehend, Rei pilots Evangelion Unit-00 as NERV's First Child — less a soldier than a vessel shaped entirely by others' will.
